How to Choose a Sperm Donor

Choosing a sperm donor is one of the most personal decisions in your family-building journey. This guide walks you through it step by step — from what matters most to you, to genetic compatibility, to making your final choice with confidence.

1. Decide What Matters Most to You

Donor choice is a deeply personal decision. Some people prioritize physical resemblance — eye color, height, hair texture — while others focus on education, career background, personality, or shared ethnic heritage. There is no wrong way to decide.

Start by listing 3 to 5 characteristics that matter most to you. This becomes your filter when browsing donor profiles and keeps the search focused instead of overwhelming.

In our donor catalog, every profile includes childhood photographs, staff impressions and medical history. Many profiles also include a "Why I Became a Donor" statement and the extended profile responses — giving you the information you need to make a confident choice.

Common Factors to Consider

  • Physical traits — height, eye color, hair color, build, skin tone
  • Ethnic and racial background
  • Education level and professional background
  • Personality and interests (hobbies, values, favorite things)
  • Staff impressions — a third-party perspective on the donor

2. Understand What's in a Donor Profile

We offer some of the most comprehensive donor profiles in the industry. Every profile is designed to help you make an informed, confident decision.

What You'll Find in Each Profile

  • Photographs — Childhood photos that give you an early look at the donor's features.
  • Additional media — The profiles also include a handwritten letter.
  • Why I Became a Donor — The donor's own explanation of why they chose to donate.
  • Physical characteristics — Height, weight, eye color, hair color and texture, build, and skin tone.
  • Education and lifestyle — Education, areas of study, occupation, languages, exercise, diet, and other lifestyle details.
  • Staff impressions — Notes from our team who meet each donor in person.
  • Medical details — Blood type, CMV status, overall health, and surgical history.
  • Family history — Multi-generation family history, including parents, grandparents, siblings, and children information when applicable.
  • Extended profile responses — Hobbies, values, strengths, goals, favorite things, and childhood memories.
  • Current unit options — The types of units, current availability, and pricing for the donor you are reviewing. Pregnancy slot is included in the price.

You can browse basic donor information for free after creating an account. Childhood photos and detailed profile information help you compare donors more thoroughly.

Use the comparison tool to view two or three donors side by side. Save favorites to your shortlist as you go so you can revisit them later without starting over.

If a donor's profile raises questions — about medical history or anything else — we are available to walk you through it at no charge.

Tip: Don't aim for perfection. Often, one profile will naturally stand out. Trust that feeling — there is no single "right" choice, only the one that feels right for you.

3. Review Genetic Screening and Compatibility

All of our donors are screened for five specific genetic conditions and must test negative before being approved as donors.

In addition, you have the option to purchase Genetic Matching. This involves sending a saliva sample to the laboratory, where your DNA is compared with the selected donor's genetic profile. Based on this analysis, the laboratory will determine whether you are genetically compatible with the donor.

If you are already known to be a carrier of a specific genetic condition, a Known Carrier Match can also be performed. In this case, the laboratory compares your genetic information with the available donor test results and informs us whether you are compatible with the donor.

Genetic compatibility testing can provide additional reassurance and help identify any potential genetic overlap before treatment proceeds.

4. Understand CMV status

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a very common virus, and most adults have been exposed to it at some point in their lives, often without noticeable symptoms. Once infected, the body develops lifelong antibodies.

All sperm donors are carefully screened for CMV. Donors with an active or recent CMV infection are not accepted. Only donors without signs of active infection are eligible for donation, including those who have previously been exposed and have developed antibodies.

Transmission of CMV through sperm is considered very rare. For most patients, CMV status does not need to be a deciding factor when choosing a donor.

If you have specific concerns about CMV or your own CMV status, we recommend discussing this with your healthcare professional.

5. Choose the units

The type of sperm units you order depends on the treatment you will be having. We offer units containing 0.5 ml sperm MOT20+ and MOT10+.

Clinic IUI

Use washed IUI units for intrauterine insemination (IUI). The sperm must be washed prior to insemination to remove prostaglandins and reduce the risk of severe cramping.

Unwashed ICI units are also an option. In this case, the fertility clinic laboratory will wash the sperm before the insemination procedure. Please note that many clinics charge an additional fee for this service.

Both MOT10 and MOT20 units can be used for IUI treatment. Please consult your medical professional or fertility clinic regarding their preferred protocol.

IVF or ICSI

Both ICI and IUI units can be used depending on your fertility clinic's protocol.

All available MOTs are suitable for IVF and ICSI.

6. Narrow It Down and Make Your Choice

Once you have reviewed profiles, checked genetic compatibility, and chosen your unit type, it is time to make a final decision. Here are practical strategies that help:

  • Save favorites — Add donors to your shortlist as you browse. Revisit them later with fresh eyes.
  • Use the comparison tool — View two or three donors side by side to spot differences that matter.
  • Involve your partner — If you are making this decision with a partner, share the profiles and discuss what resonates for each of you.
  • Trust your instinct — There is no single "perfect" donor. The right choice is the one that feels right for your family.

Plan for Future Siblings. If you think you may want biological siblings in the future, consider ordering extra units now. Donor availability can change — reserving units ensures you can use the same donor for future cycles.

What Makes Our Donors Different

  • DNA-Verified — We are the first and only sperm bank that DNA-verifies every donor sample. Independent testing confirms each sample matches the donor profile with 99.999% accuracy — at no additional cost.
  • Rigorous Screening — Fewer than 2% of applicants qualify. Every donor passes medical, genetic, psychological, and infectious disease screening plus a background check. Sperm is quarantined for 6 months before release.
  • 25-Family Limit — Every donor is limited to a maximum of 25 families worldwide. All donors are Identity Disclosure, meaning your child can request identifying information about their donor when they turn 18.
